How can impulse control disorder be diagnosed?

Impulse Control disorders are listed elsewhere on psychological.com. Diagnosis is based upon a constellation of behaviors which meet certain criteria. Thus, if a person has numerous behaviors that meet the criteria for an impulse control disorder, then that diagnosis is applied. But I am not certain how this relates to Marital Discord where you posted your question. Perhaps you can clarify.

For years, items disappear from my home. The items are things like, keys, bras, clothing, food, and even stuff I need for my car; like antifreeze and oil. One time I couldn't find my keys, and I looked in the pocket of the shorts I had on the previous day(over 50 X). A few days later, I found the keys in the shorts but in a pocket that I never use; (they were carpenter shorts). That was about five years ago.
I haven't actually "caught" my spouse from taking them, but when I confront him, he either gets defensive or ignores my inquiry. I don't accuse him of taking things anymore. He also (this is disgusting) wipes mucas, pimple pus and boogers on me and other things in the house. When I ask (confront) him about it, he tells me I don't know what Im talking about. He starts arguments and its to a point now, where I don't argue anymore, I just live with it. I do wonder if he has a mental illness of some kind or if its me going crazy.

Sounds like you should discuss this with your family physician and get a referral, then determine if your husband will comply. The problem is not his disorder but his unwillingness to address it.
