I am concerned about a family member who has undergone 2 plastic surgery procedures to "fix" a facial feature that he believes to be "disfigured". I have tried talking to this person and explaining to him that I don't see the disfigurement and that I think he looks great but, he thinks I'm saying this because I love him. Over $10K in cosmetic procedures and he is severely depressed because he thinks the surgeries haven't fixed the problem but, instead made it look worse. I really can't even see a noticeable difference in ANY of the procedures. He is now trying to figure out what to do to make it look "better" even at the cost of spending more money. I have encouraged him to talk to somebody professionally who can help him with his perception of his appearance but, he thinks I'm not being understanding. Does this sound typical of body dysmorphic disorder or something else and how can I help him? What other area's can I research? He has become so upset with his appearance that he can't eat or sleep and is embarassed to be seen in public. If you could see him, I know you would never think there was anything wrong with him - he's NORMAL. Please provide some guidance.
