Can someone with Facticious Disorder be helped? I have a neice who faked cancer and is now in jail for frauding our community. I would like to know that there is help and where we can get it. We know she was into drugs but we're not sure if this is the only motive for her actions. Could you please give any information that would benefit us and her. We live in Wisconsin. Thanks

If she defrauded a community, it is unlikely that Factitious Disorder is the only concern. Her addiction would be the primary target of treatment. But also, someone should address the issue as to whether she has symptoms and signs of a personality disorder (Eg. borderline, anti-social, etc). People with factitious disorder are dependent and want to remain in (even painful) treatment. People who defraud are malingering: quite a difference. Best of luck.

Just wanted to ask another question. My neice likes to be the center of attention, does this also have to do with malingering? Do you feel there would be help if she was willing. Yes she also has symptoms of a personality disorder. She always has since childhood. We would appriciate any information on this ie... web pages, advise that you could give. We really don't want to give up hope that she can be helped. Thanks

Reading the information on this site may give you concepts and terms that you can then search more globally for specific sites. You may wish to focus upon terms such as borderline personality disorder, anti-social personality disorder and malingering. You also may need a better understanding of the concept of factitious disorder (whose entire goal is to remain in a patient role).
